The Letter That Was Never Sent
“Some words are never meant to reach the person who inspired them. They are written only to keep a part of our own heart alive.”
There are letters that change lives.
And then there are letters that remain hidden forever.
Kajal never intended to send this one.
Weeks had passed since she had last seen Aarav.
Work continued.
Life moved forward.
Yet, every now and then, she found herself wondering about the quiet man who had once carried laughter so effortlessly, but now seemed to carry only silence.
She never claimed to understand him.
She didn’t know what his divorce had taken away.
She didn’t know how many sleepless nights he had spent looking at the stars above Melbourne, searching for answers that never arrived.
She only knew one thing.
Sometimes, when he smiled, it looked as though he was remembering the man he used to be.
One rainy evening, Kajal opened her notebook.
Without thinking of publication…
Without thinking of recognition…
She simply began to write.
Not to Aarav.
Not for herself.
But for the version of a human being that pain often hides.
She folded the page after writing it.
It remained inside her diary.
Unread.
Unsent.
My Rebirth
— A Conversation with My Own Shadow
Last night, I met my shadow.
Not the one the sun creates,
but the one sorrow leaves behind.
It sat beside me without speaking,
until finally it smiled and asked,
“Have you forgotten who you are?”
“Look at yourself.”
“You were once the person people turned to for wisdom.
You carried storms with grace.
You gave courage to those who had none.
When did you begin believing that your own story had ended?”
I searched for an answer.
Silence replied.
My shadow continued,
“Your life is far from over.”
“Look around you.”
“You are blessed in more ways than your broken heart allows you to see.”
“Respect still walks beside you.
Your knowledge still inspires people.
Your work still carries purpose.
The sky above you has not changed.
Only your eyes have forgotten how to look at it.”
Then it whispered the words I needed most.
“What has passed is beyond your reach.”
“No amount of overthinking will rewrite yesterday.”
“But tomorrow…”
“Tomorrow is still waiting for the version of you that chooses to rise.”
“Be gentler with yourself.”
“Allow yourself to laugh again.”
“Allow the people who love you to see light in your eyes instead of exhaustion.”
“Happiness is not waiting somewhere in the future.”
“It has been quietly living inside you all along.”
“You only stopped visiting it.”
The wind grew softer.
The silence no longer frightened me.
Before disappearing, my shadow smiled one last time.
“There is one thing you keep forgetting.”
“You are the Instrument Rated Pilot of your own life.”
“Storms will always exist.”
“Clouds will hide the horizon.”
“Some flights will demand courage you never imagined possessing.”
“But you were trained for weather like this.”
“Trust your instruments.”
“Trust your direction.”
“Rise above the clouds.”
“The sun has never stopped shining.”
When I opened my eyes…
The shadow was gone.
Only dawn remained.
And for the first time in a very long time…
I realised that perhaps rebirth does not happen when life changes.
Perhaps it begins the moment we choose to believe that our story is not over.
Kajal closed the diary.
She smiled to herself.
No envelope.
No message.
No email.
Some words are not written to be delivered.
They are written because somewhere, we hope the universe carries them to the soul that needs them most.
Many years later, if anyone had opened that diary, they would have assumed it was simply another poem.
Only Kajal knew the truth.
It was never a love letter.
It was a quiet prayer that one human being would one day remember how to live again.
