Geography As a Discipline

Geography is the study of the earth. The term geography was first coined by Eratosthenes, a Greek philosopher around 276-194 BC. The word comes from the two Greek words such as geo means earth and graphic meaning the illustration. Together it means the study of the earth. Geography is distinct from other topics in science but it is closely connected to several rules. Geography gathers figures from all the natural and social sciences and examines the amalgamation. Geography as rules focuses with the three main areas of questions such as

  • A few questions that handle the recognition of the techniques of topographical and cultural characteristics which were found over the surface of the Earth. These are the questions about what?
  • A few questions that handle the spreading of topographical, human and cultural characteristics over the surrounding of the earth. These are the questions about where?
  • The third question provides a clarification of the usual association between characteristics, procceses and the occurance. These are the questions about why?

Who is a Geographer

A geographer discovers the informal relationship between two or more phenomena. He or she summarises the phenomena in a frame of justification and effect association, as it not only aids in explanation but also describes the miracles in future.

Association between physical geography and natural science

  • Traditional physical geography is linked with geology, meteorology, hydrology and pedology.
  • The natural sciences are associated with topography, atmospheric conditions, scientific study of the ocean, soil geography, etc.
  • Bio-Geography is based on plant life, animal life and even ecology because human beings live in different places.
  • A geographer should be proficient in mathematics, drawing maps and so on.
  • Geography is closely linked to the teaching of celestial positions which focuses with latitudes and longitudes.
  • The shape of the earth is spherical. A geographer must construct a map which is a two-dimensional illustration of the Earth.
  • Transforming the spherical shape of the earth can be created by projections drawn via graphics  or maths. The topographical and numerical methods need huge proficiency in mathematics, data handling and applied economics.
  • Maps are made by creative thinking.
  • For creating sketches, a person should be proficient in mind mapping.

Association between geography and social science

  • All the fields in social science such as sociology, civics, economics and demography study tell the various aspects of social reality.
  • The domains of geography such as social, political, economic and population and settlements are closely based on the fields of social science.
  • Economics focuses on the main issues of the providence such as creation, distribution, exchange and usage.
  • Each of these features has distinct aspects and the economic geography is to learn about creation, distribution, exchange and usage.
  • The population geography is closely linked to the field of demography.
  • Geography has a powerful association with natural and social sciences but it follows techniques of study which makes it distinct from others.
  • Geography has spongy connections with other fields.
  • Geography uses figures gathered from sister fields and use the synthesis over space.
  • By using maps, geography transform numerical figures into pictorial form for carrying out the spatial pattern.
Types of geography
Physical geography
Geomorphology studies about topography, creation and methods and related processes. Climatology studies about temperatures and weather types and areas. Hydrology is the study of water over the earth surface such as oceans, lakes, rivers and sea. Soil geography is the study of creation of soil, soil types, distribution, fertility conditions and use.
Human Geography
